Towards the Flame (2019) 12 min
WE COME from a dark abyss, we end in a dark abyss, and we call the luminous interval life. As soon as we are born the return begins, at once the setting forth and the coming back; we die in every moment. Because of this many have cried out: The goal of life is death!
Nikos Kazantzakis, The Saviours of God – Ασκητική, 1927
Towards the Flame is a mental land(sound)scape based on the ancient Latin palindrome IN GIRUM IMUS NOCTE ET CONSUMIMUR IGNI (we enter the circle at night, and we are consumed by fire). This palindrome describes the action of moths that are consumed by their own inclination to fly towards the fire. What attracts them kills them; creatures of darkness consumed by the flame in eternal circles of repetition.
Towards the Flame is a room of thoughts created by the voices of friends that – burning with their breathing – bring form to the palindrome and exhaust it by repetition.
Towards the Flame is a nexus of memory generated by all our intricate private and social relationships that moves both inwards towards our personal space and outwards towards our social sphere. A space self-created and self-consumed by our passage from darkness to light, towards the flame in eternal circles of repetition.
See it in darkness and at maximum volume!
